DAY 2 - REQUIRED READING

Today's priorities

Referees

  • Only players and the Team Manager or coach may sit on team benches, on the same side as the scorers' table. Parents and spectators must sit on the opposite side. Team Managers are responsible for communicating this to their families.
  • Each team has one 1-minute timeout in the second half only. A team in possession MUST advance the ball into the front court after its timeout. The clock continues during the timeout unless it occurs in the final 2 minutes.
  • Use the available bibs for any uniform clash. See Natalie for bibs.
  • All-Star and MVP voting is a priority. We need five Girls All-Stars and one Girls MVP, plus five Boys All-Stars and one Boys MVP. Watch for candidates throughout today's games and give Tim your selections before the awards are finalised.
  • Before every game, confirm with the scorers which team is Team A and which is Team B. Check the completed score sheet and winning team before it is submitted.

Scorers

  • Before play begins, confirm exactly which team is Team A and which is Team B.
  • Write the correct winning team on the score sheet and verify it with the referees before submitting. A Day 1 result had to be reversed because the wrong winning team was recorded.
  • Track timeouts: one per team, available in the second half only.
  • Signal back to the referee to acknowledge every point scored and every timeout used.
  • Submit the checked score sheet to the Tournament Controller immediately after the game.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Know your role

Head Referee

  • Lead the court, support the Volunteer Referee, apply the rules, confirm the final score and escalate problems.
  • Remain in charge of the game ball. Do not lend or give it to anyone, including volunteers who are helping.
  • Discourage volunteers from shooting on the hoops between games, as this interferes with the teams’ warm-up space.
  • Take responsibility for the unique Cross Over rules. Only the Head Referee awards Vision Points and points for illegal defence. Only one Vision Point may be awarded per possession.
  • Encourage the Volunteer Referee to call standard violations and fouls.
  • Development is the number-one priority: provide plenty of verbal advice, feedback and teaching, especially on Day 1.
  • Competitiveness is the next priority: referee without allowing too many exceptions for line violations, travelling, double dribbles and other standard violations.
  • During close Day 1 games and every Day 2 game, consistently calling all violations becomes the top priority.
  • Encourage the Volunteer Referee to blow their whistle loudly. Give them support, encouragement and advice whenever possible.
  • Clearly signal every point to the scorers, especially the unique one-point awards for Vision Points, fouls and illegal defence.

Volunteer Referee

  • Report to the Head Referee, explain decisions and support substitutions.
  • Blow your whistle loudly.
  • Speak clearly and loudly. Point and use large hand gestures so players and scorers know whose ball it is.
  • Call standard violations and fouls, and ask the Head Referee whenever you are unsure.

Scorers

  • Confirm the game and teams before play begins.
  • One scorer operates the score sheet; the other operates the scoreboard and game timer.
  • Know how to operate the scoreboard and timer, including the stop clock.
  • Manage the possession arrow throughout the game.
  • Support the score-sheet operator by calling every point aloud in case their head is down and they miss a signal.
  • Acknowledge the referee by mirroring the signals for one-point awards—free throws, Vision Points, fouls and illegal defence—and for two- and three-point field goals.
  • Verify the final score and submit the completed score sheet to the Tournament Controller immediately after the game.

Backup duty team

Provides two scorers only if activated. The Team Manager coordinates two suitable people and ensures they report promptly to the allocated court.

QUICK REFERENCE

Rules

Timing
30-minute slot: 2-minute warm-up, two 10-minute halves and 2-minute halftime. Final 2 minutes of the second half are stop clock.
Points and overtime
Day 1: one 2-minute stop-clock overtime, then the game finishes in a draw. Day 2: up to two 2-minute overtimes, then first to score 4 points—no clock needed for the first-to-4 tiebreaker.
Development scoring
Normal 2- and 3-point goals. One Vision Point for a pass to an undefended teammate in a clear-path-to-the-hoop position. Every foul awards one point; shooting fouls also receive the appropriate free throws from a reduced distance.
Defence and wristbands
Defenders retreat after a turnover. No front-court pressure. Players defend the same wristband colour and may not camp near the basket unless defending their match-up. One point awarded for illegal defence.
Substitutions and support
Referees may stop play every 2–3 minutes for substitutions. Rolling substitutions are allowed but not recommended. Explain decisions and support players.
Violations and behaviour
Five seconds inbound/holding; three seconds in key; travelling; double dribble; carrying; out of bounds; intentional kicking/punching. No backcourt violation. Respect is non-negotiable—contact Tim for abuse or threats.
